Big Coppitt Key, Florida, being a low-lying island, is directly in the line of impact for potentially devastating hurricanes, and is also at high risk for flooding due to its proximity to the ocean and lack of elevation. The threat extends beyond wind damage to include storm surges, flooding, and even the potential risk of isolation due to washed-out roads or bridges. Additionally, its geographical location, relatively close to the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, makes it both a prime target for tropical storms and hurricanes and a potential disaster zone for surges that can well exceed the island's elevation. Over the last 30 years, Big Coppitt Key has experienced several significant weather events. Most notably was Hurricane Irma in September 2017, which made landfall in the Florida Keys as a Category 4 hurricane and caused extensive damage from both wind and storm surge. Flooding has historically been a significant threat with previous hurricanes such as Hurricane Wilma in 2005 causing massive surge-related flooding on the island. Furthermore, being a small island community, prompt evacuation and adequate preparation become major considerations to mitigate the loss of life and property.
