About Woodlawn Beach.
Woodlawn Beach in Santa Rosa County, Florida, is located right along the coast, making it highly vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms. The town sits at a relatively low elevation, with most of it near at or below sea level, which can exacerbate flood risks during storm surges, particularly if they coincide with high tides. As the majority of the town is located on a barrier island (Santa Rosa Island), its geographical location presents additional risks as these types of formations are directly exposed to the physical impacts from hurricanes due to lack of natural barriers, including high winds, heavy rain, and potential tornado activities associated with these storms. Over the last 30 years, several significant storms have impacted Woodlawn Beach. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan, a Category 3 storm at landfall, caused significant damage in the area as did Hurricane Dennis in 2005. In 2020, Hurricane Sally, nearly a Category 3 storm, led to serious flooding and structural damages. Another important consideration is that in addition to one-time hurricane incidents, the repetitive erosional impact on the shoreline due to recurrent hurricanes and storms poses a substantial ongoing threat to the infrastructure and properties of Woodlawn Beach. This, coupled with potential sea level rise due to climate change, might increase the town's flood vulnerability during future hurricanes.
