Apopka, Florida, positioned inland and northwest of Orlando, is less directly exposed to hurricanes than Florida’s coastal communities, but it is still at significant risk from hurricane-related precipitation and wind. Hurricanes can carry vast volumes of water; consequently, torrential rains are commonplace even a substantial distance inland. Taking into account Apopka's relatively low elevation and the area's history of flooding, there is a high potential for minor to severe flood incidents associated with hurricane events. The storm surge threats seen in coastal regions however are not a concern for Apopka due to its inland position. Over the last 30 years, several major hurricane events have impacted Apopka. Notably, the 2004 hurricane season was particularly impactful, with Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne striking Central Florida causing significant damage. Hurricane Irma in 2017 also hit Apopka hard, resulting in significant wind damage and power outages, as well as heavy rains causing local flooding. Beyond physical damage, such events often lead to prolonged power outages, interrupted services, and temporary displacement of residents. Therefore, residents should always be prepared for these possibilities during hurricane season.
