Indialantic, Florida is at considerable risk from potential hurricane impacts, given that it is a barrier island town lying directly on the Atlantic coast of the state. Its low-lying elevation of just 10 feet above sea level makes it exceptionally vulnerable to storm surges, particularly in an environment of rising sea levels. The town exhibits a foreground of shorelines which are at high risk of hurricane-driven waves and storm surge, both of which can lead to direct coastal flooding. This flooding risk is further exacerbated by heavy rainfall from the hurricanes, which can cause inland flooding in the area. Additionally, high-speed hurricane winds can cause considerable property and infrastructure damage. Historically, Indialantic has been in the pathway of multiple major hurricanes over the last 30 years, notably the 2004 series of hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. Hurricane Irma in 2017 also made a significant impact. These hurricanes led to heavy flooding, wind damage, and enforced prolonged evacuation orders for residents. Consequently, given Indialantic's coastal position, low elevation, and susceptibility to hurricanes in the historic record, adequate preparation and fortification should be advised to mitigate these recurring hurricane impacts.
