Grenelefe, Florida, situated inland in Polk County, isn't directly in the path of coastal storm surges, the most destructive aspect of a hurricane. However, even though it is located approximately 80 miles from the east coast and 70 miles from the west coast, it remains vulnerable to other potential hurricane impacts such as high winds, torrential rains, and tornadoes spin-off due to its privilege position on the peninsula that experiences many landfalling hurricanes. Additionally, given the relatively low elevation of the town and the numerous lakes that may contribute to localized flooding, heavy rain from hurricanes can pose a flood risk. Historically, Grenelefe and Polk County have been hit by some significant hurricanes and weather events over the past 30 years. The most destructive of these were Hurricane Charley that landed in 2004, Irma in 2017, and most recently, Eta in 2020. Each of these storms brought a substantial amount of rain, leading to extensive flooding, high winds causing structural damages, power outages, and widespread tree downfall, which disrupted transportation and utilities for allextended periods. Therefore, although Grenelefe is somewhat sheltered from the direct coastal impacts, hurricanes and tropical storms still pose significant risks warranting proper preparation and planning.
