About Chattahoochee.
Chattahoochee, Florida is located in Gadsden County about 60 miles from the Gulf coast. Its relative inland location provides some protection from storm surge, arguably the most destructive hazard associated with hurricanes. Indeed, storm surge, usually associated with coastal towns, would likely be lower on Chattahoochee's list of concerns given its substantial distance from the coastline. Its relatively low elevation (about 79 feet above sea level), however, leaves it susceptible to freshwater flooding caused by prolonged heavy rainfalls associated with hurricanes.
There have been several significant hurricane impacts in Chattahoochee's recent history. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan passed just to the west, causing significant rain and wind damage, resulting in extensive power outages but no significant flooding. More recently, in 2018, Hurricane Michael, a powerful Category 5 storm, passed through the region causing a lot of damage. Chattahoochee experienced damaging wind gusts, but the town was fortunate to avoid the worst of the record-breaking rainfall. However, the Apalachicola River, which Chattahoochee is situated on, has experienced instances of substantial flooding.
