Bonifay, Florida is situated more inland, approximately 70 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, thus it could potentially be less vulnerable to direct hurricane impacts such as storm surges. However, being an inland city doesn't exempt Bonifay from the damaging effects of a hurricane's heavy rainfall, high winds, and tornadoes spawned within the storm. Furthermore, Bonifay's general elevation is relatively low, with much of the city sitting at or just above sea level, which could amplify flood risks in the event of excessive rainfall. Flash floods and river flooding remain significant threats during storm events due to this low-lying topography and the presence of water bodies like the Holmes Creek adjacent to the town. Historically, Bonifay has witnessed the impacts of several major hurricanes and tropical storms, including, more recently, Hurricane Michael in 2018 which brought severe devastation across the Florida Panhandle. Even though a considerable distance from the actual landfall site, Bonifay experienced damaging winds and heavy rainfall. The 1994 Tropical Storm Alberto also caused extreme flooding in parts of Florida including Holmes County, of which Bonifay is the county seat. Such past incidents serve as reminders for residents to remain vigilant and prepared during hurricane season, regardless of the city's distance from the coast. Proper preparation should include regular monitoring of the National Weather Service's advisories and warnings, as well as having an evacuation or shelter plan in place.
