Hypoluxo, Florida, due to its coastal location, has a considerable risk of being impacted by a hurricane. Its position on the eastern shore of Florida, with direct exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, makes it highly susceptible to storm surge, heavy rainfall, cyclonic winds, and flooding associated with hurricanes. The town's relatively low elevation further enhances flood risks, especially from storm surges and high tides during strong hurricane events. Another hurricane impact consideration is infrastructure damage; high-speed winds from hurricanes can cause massive destruction to properties, power lines, and roads, thereby disrupting daily life activities and essential services. Over the last 30 years, Hypoluxo has experienced several major hurricanes, with the most significant ones being Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and the hurricane season of 2004 when it was hit by hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in quick succession. Recently, in 2017, Hurricane Irma passed just west of Hypoluxo, causing widespread flooding and wind damage. In most of these hurricane-induced events, Hypoluxo faced significant flooding problems, primarily due to its proximity to the coast, flat terrain, and poor drainage. Therefore, even though the town has relatively robust hurricane response procedures, these factors can still increase its vulnerability to both direct and indirect hurricane threats.
