About Eastpoint.
As a coastal community located in Franklin County, Eastpoint, Florida is highly susceptible to hurricane threats since it borders the Gulf of Mexico. This geographic position places it directly on the path of many storms, subjecting the town to heavy rains, powerful wind gusts, storm surges, and flooding. Despite boasting an average elevation of 6 feet, which is relatively high for Florida's coastal towns, its low-lying areas are vulnerable to flooding, especially during storm surges. These areas include residential zones, infrastructure, and critical facilities that could be severely impacted, leading to evacuations, property damage, and potential loss of life. Over the last 30 years, Eastpoint has experienced notable hurricanes that have left lasting impressions and devastation. Hurricane Michael in October 2018, for instance, caused significant damage. This Category 5 hurricane, with winds reaching up to 160 mph, led to widespread flooding and serious structural damage. Additionally, the town recovered from Hurricane Earl in 1998, and more recently, Hurricane Hermine in 2016, both of which caused massive flooding and damage. These historical instances underline the need for continuous hurricane preparedness and mitigation strategies in Eastpoint to minimize future hurricane impact.
