Milton, Florida, is located inland but is proximate enough to the Gulf Coast to face serious hurricane impacts. Just over 20 miles from the beach and relatively flat, with much of the city being less than 100 feet above sea level, it is vulnerable to hurricane-driven storm surges, heavy rainfall, and consequent freshwater flooding. The Blackwater River that runs through it could potentially intensify flooding conditions if a hurricane triggers an overflow. High winds from hurricanes could also pose a significant risk, causing structural damage and power outages. In terms of historical storm impacts, the most notable in recent memory include Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Sally in 2020. Ivan, a Category 3 storm, caused extensive wind damage and flooding in Milton, while Sally, considerably slower-moving as a Category 2, resulted in historic flood levels. Downtown Milton, in particular, being situated along the river, experienced substantial flooding during these storms. Therefore, future hurricane threat assessments for Milton need to consider not only the direct effects of hurricanes themselves but also the serious flood risks both from storm surge along the coast and from heightened river levels.
