Waverly, Florida's location in Central Florida, slightly inland and approximately 48 miles from the nearest coast of Tampa Bay, can somewhat decrease direct impact from hurricanes but doesn't eliminate the possibility. Its relatively low elevation (only 121 feet above sea level) might not be significant enough to mitigate flood risk entirely, especially during substantial rainfall brought by storm systems. Additionally, the town is situated in a region susceptible to hurricanes path, which could result in severe wind damage, powers outages, and potential for tornadoes. Historically, this area has suffered from hurricane-related incidents, therefore, a plan for evacuation or shelter should be considered seriously during the hurricane season. Within the last 30 years, Waverly has experienced some major storms including Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and the unprecedented 2004 hurricane season wherefour major hurricanes- Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne- passed through Florida. Most recently, the town was greatly impacted by Hurricane Irma in 2017. These hurricanes have shown the potential for flooding, structural damage imposed by strong winds, and extended power outages, reminding residents of the profound effect hurricanes could have on the region despite being a bit inland. Therefore, while its longevity without direct impact could provide some reassurance, the town's past history suggests a risk for significant impacts from major storm events.
