In reference to past major hurricanes and floods, Hurricane Fran in 1996 caused significant damage inland, prompting heavy rainfall and consequential flooding in areas similar to Chilhowie. More recently, in 2018, remnants of Hurricane Florence brought significant rainfall over western parts of Virginia including towns like Chilhowie. Therefore, even though Chilhowie is inland and not directly on the hurricane path, the storm impacts can still be substantial, especially in terms of heavy rainfall and flooding. Consequently, hurricane preparedness plans, early warning systems, and effective communication strategies remain crucial considerations for the town to mitigate these potential hurricane threats.
