Burke, Virginia, despite being approximately 160 miles from the Atlantic Coast, is not immune to hurricane threats. While the distance significantly diminishes the risk of direct hurricane impact or storm surge, hurricanes downgrading into tropical storms can carry heavy rainfall into the region, contributing to flash floods and river swelling. Burke's average elevation of around 350 feet above sea level reduces the risk of severe flooding, yet heavy rainfall can still cause localized flooding due to excessive runoff. Weak soil absorption, combined with the extensive pavement and the town's position in relation to the Pohick Creek and Burke Lake, also exacerbate the risk. In recent history, Burke has been impacted by several significant weather events. The remnants of Hurricane Isabel in 2003 brought heavy rainfall and damaging winds, causing power outages and a significant number of fallen trees. In 2011, Hurricane Irene also affected this area, though with less severity. In term of floods, the most drastic in recent memory was from 2001's Tropical Storm Allison. Although it caused more damage in Texas, its remnants caused significant flooding in Virginia, including in Burke. Hence, while Burke is not a frontline coastal town, its propensity for experiencing the remnants of tropical weather systems necessitates preparations regarding flooding and wind damage during hurricane season.
