Woodbridge, Virginia, is relatively inland, approximately 25 miles from the coastline. While this positioning somewhat reduces direct impact risks from hurricanes like storm surge, Woodbridge remains susceptible to other substantial hurricane impacts such as strong winds, heavy rainfall, and flooding. One key consideration is the town's elevation, which is relatively low, varying between 20 and 224 feet above sea level. This makes Woodbridge highly susceptible to flooding, particularly flash flooding following intense rainfall. Additionally, the town's location along the Potomac River could trigger river flooding after a hurricane or severe storm. In terms of previous hurricane impacts, Hurricane Fran in 1996 brought a considerable amount of rainfall and flooding to the Woodbridge area.
