About Crimora.
Crimora, VA, being roughly 140 miles inland from the Atlantic coast, is not directly exposed to the initial brunt of hurricanes. The primary threat to this area from hurricanes is typically rainfall-induced flooding. Crimora, positioned in a valley, and near South River and creeks, is more susceptible to inland flooding. The city’s elevation, which ranges from about 1150 to 1500 feet, is a contributing factor for flash floods during extreme rainfall. Historically, Crimora has been impacted by severe storms that have brought about excessive rain and winds causing flood-related issues and property damage. Of note are Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Isabel in 2003 which caused widespread damage due to flooding in many parts of Virginia. Hurricane Camille in 1969, while outside of the 30-year time span, is an extreme example of the devastation that can be caused by remnants of a tropical system in this area. As hurricanes continue to exhibit increased rainfall rates possibly due to the changing climate, residents should take necessary precautions during hurricane season. It would also serve Crimora well to invest in continued improvements in its flood mitigation and stormwater management systems.
