About Emory.
Emory, Virginia, located in Washington County, is situated roughly 270 miles inland from the Atlantic coast, which marginally reduces its vulnerability to the most intense impacts of a coastline-falling hurricane. However, this does not safeguard it entirely. Hurricanes often carry their destructive power far inland, bringing substantial rainfall leading to flash floods, along with high-speed winds that can cause extensive infrastructure damage. Emory's elevation, which is around 2,000 feet, means it could potentially be at risk from upland flooding and landslides caused by a hurricane's heavy rainfall. The town does have a history of substantial weather events, notably Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Although Emory is considerably interior, Hurricane Isabel still managed to bring significant rain to the area. More recently in 2018, Hurricane Florence caused widespread flooding and damage across Virginia, although its direct hit on Emory was not as severe. It is crucial to commemorate that each storm has its characteristics and thus can have diverse effects even if the historical patterns propose a certain level of resilience. Therefore, residents and local businesses should always pay heed to storm warnings and drain excess water to mitigate the risk of flooding.
