Goochland, Virginia, though inland and far removed from the immediate impacts of a hurricane's landfall, is not immune to the destructive potential a tropical system can possess. As hurricanes move inland, they can cause severe flooding due to heavy rainfall, particularly in areas with significant river systems. Goochland's proximity to the James River, coupled with its relatively lower elevation (average height of roughly 200 feet above sea level) crest a risk for substantial flooding. Moreover, even as hurricanes downgrade to tropical storms or depressions, they can still propagate substantial wind damage, including downed trees and power lines, which can pose significant risks to life and property. In view of the historical hurricane impacts on Goochland, the remnants of Hurricane Camille (1969) resulted in some of the most devastating inland flooding Virginia has ever experienced, although Goochland was somewhat spared, areas in the nearby vicinity experienced severe destruction. More recently, hurricanes Isabel (2003), Irene (2011), and Michael (2018) caused significant damage throughout the state with downed power lines, damaged buildings, and widespread flooding, and Goochland did not elude these effects. Consequently, the threat of hurricanes and their resulting floods is a significant consideration for Goochland residents. It's therefore essential for the citizens to be prepared and stay updated with meteorological advisories during the hurricane season that spans from June to November.
