About Pound.
Pound, Virginia, being significantly inland (approximately 300 miles from the closest stretch of the Atlantic Coast), can be insulated to a degree from the most intense impacts of tropical systems such as hurricanes. However, this location does not make it immune to hurricane remnants and transitional systems that can produce impactful weather such as heavy rain, wind, and even tornadoes. The region, with an elevation of around 1,500 feet, often encounters a weather phenomenon known as 'orographic lift' that can enhance rainfall and thus flood risk especially in the context of an already moisture-laden system like the remnants of a hurricane. While flooding is on the radar, Pound's elevation does mitigate against massive flooding to some extent. The last few major hurricane impacts in Pound can be traced back to Hurricanes Fran (1996) and Isabel (2003). While they had devolved into tropical storm strength by the time they reached Virginia, they still caused significant rainfall and some wind damage across the region. Remnants from Hurricane Florence in 2018 also caused notable rainfall in the area. In terms of severe floods, in 2002, a significant flood event struck western Virginia, although it was caused by a line of potent thunderstorms rather than a tropical cyclone. Assessing potential hurricane impacts for Pound would have to consider these previous events, the propensity for heavy rainfall due to orographic enhancement, and the limitations imposed by its geographical location.
