Despite being nearly 40 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, Rushmere can experience significant effects from powerful hurricanes. Storm surges from the coast can travel up the James River, causing heightened water levels and potential flooding. Though Rushmere has relatively higher ground compared to areas directly on the coast, heavy rain from hurricanes can still lead to flash or slow-onset flooding.
