About Bassett.
Bassett, Virginia is situated approximately 200 miles inland from the Atlantic coastline. This significant distance means that the risk of direct hurricane impacts such as storm surges is relatively small. However, Bassett's immediate proximity to the Smith River, combined with the area's relatively moderate elevation, could amplify the risks associated with torrential rainfall during major hurricane events. Hurricanes can bring excessive rainfall that, combined with the area's moderate slopes and permeable soils, can quickly accumulate in the Smith River Basin, leading to significant flood risks. Given Bassett's position in the river basin, this becomes a critical concern. Furthermore, hurricanes can bring strong wind gusts that have the potential to cause structural damage and pose a risk to the area's sizeable forested regions. In the last 30 years, the most significant hurricanes to affect Bassett, VA were Hurricanes Fran (1996) and Isabel (2003). Hurricane Fran brought torrential rain, leading to minor to moderate flooding, while Hurricane Isabel caused sustained winds that led to considerable wind damage. In 1989, the remnants of Hurricane Hugo also brought significant wind damage to the area. Given these past events, it's suggested that residents stay alert to hurricane forecasts and ensure they're prepared with a flood escape plan and have measures in place to help mitigate wind-related damage to property.
