Sandy Level, Virginia, is situated approximately 200 miles inland from the coast which provides it certain protection from the direct hits of hurricanes but still places it within the potential path of these storms as they move inland. It is crucial to note that Sandy Level, due to its relative proximity to rivers and bodies of water, is prone to river and flash floods especially after heavy or prolonged rainfall which a hurricane or post-tropical storm could deliver. Over the past 30 years, Virginia has been periodically affected by hurricanes and tropical storms that moved from the coast and swept inland causing rainfall, high winds and flooding. The most significant of these events being Hurricane Isabel in 2003 and Hurricane Fran in 1996, both causing state-wide destruction.
