Haysi, Virginia, located almost 300 miles from the nearest coast and at an elevation of nearly 1200 feet, experiences a diminished risk from direct hurricane impacts, although indirect ones such as heavy rain can still occur. As a result of the substantial distance from the coast, the town is unlikely to be affected by storm surge or high-speed winds compared to coastal areas. Instead, the most significant risk is often associated with post-landfall rainfall leading to localized flooding. The area does have an historical risk of riverine and flash flooding given the role of the Russell Fork River which runs through Haysi. In the last 30 years, Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Ivan in 2004 brought significant rainfall to the area contributing to some localized flooding. However, most notable was the Flood of 2002 known as the "St. Patrick's Day Flood" that hit Haysi particularly hard, causing extensive damage. Ironically, none of the mentioned flood events were the result of a direct hurricane hit; they were caused by ancillary weather systems or hurricanes that had diminished to tropical storm status by the time they reached this inland region. Even though hurricanes aren't a direct threat to Haysi, the town should continue to prepare for the potential risks associated with heavy rainfall and flooding resultant from these storm systems.
