Savageville, Virginia, is a small town in Accomack County located approximately 15 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Its distance from the coast provides a degree of protection from the full force of hurricanes; however, this does not make it immune to hurricane effects such as heavy rainfall and high-speed wind gusts. In terms of elevation, Savageville is approximately 23 feet above sea level on average. Hence, heavy rainfall from a hurricane system could lead to flooding events. Historically, Savageville has been hit by hurricanes on multiple occasions. The 1993 Storm of the Century (also known as the '93 Superstorm), while not officially a hurricane, held similar strength and caused severe damage in the area. More recently, Hurricane Sandy in 2012 brought heavy rain and high winds that caused significant infrastructure damage and power outages. Additionally, minor flooding is common during periods of heavy rains, as with Hurricane Dorian in 2019. Therefore, while the town is somewhat protected due to its inland position, the local population and authorities must remain vigilant for hurricane risks, especially those pertaining to flash flooding and wind damage.
