Boykins, Virginia, situated at a distance of 75 miles inland from the Atlantic coast, is relatively less exposed to direct hurricane impacts such as storm surges. Its modest elevation of 69 feet provides some protection against flooding due to storm surge or high tidal levels. However, the town can still experience significant impacts from hurricanes, especially heavy rainfall, strong winds, and resulting inland flooding. In particular, the town's proximity to the Blackwater River leaves it at elevated risk of river flooding following periods of heavy rain. In the past 30 years, Boykins has been affected by several significant hurricanes and associated flood events. Most notably, in 2003, Hurricane Isabel caused widespread damage across much of Virginia, and heavy rain resulted in substantial river and flash flooding near Boykins. More recently, Hurricane Florence in 2018 led to heavy rains and flooding in Virginia, again causing considerable destruction around the Boykins area. These incidents highlight the potential threat to Boykins from heavy rainfall and inland flooding during a hurricane, despite its distance from the coast. Accordingly, local hurricane preparedness measures should focus on mitigating the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding, in addition to preparing for strong winds.
