Chantilly, Virginia is somewhat protected from hurricanes due to its inland location. However, it is not immune to these risks, and hurricanes can still bring torrential rainfall, high winds, power outages and flash floods. An additional caveat of the town lies in its elevation; as Chantilly has a relatively low-lying elevation which makes it more susceptible to flooding, particularly flash floods from heavy downpours that often accompany hurricanes. The Dulles Technology Corridor, a notable feature of Chantilly, may also experience disruptions due to hurricanes impacting power and communication infrastructure. Reviewing historical hurricane impact, Hurricane Isabel in 2003 brought heavy rain and flooding in the region. More recently, Hurricane Sandy, though it did not hit Virginia directly in 2012, caused significant rainfall in Chantilly, leading to street flooding and downed trees. Another flash flooding event occurred in 2019 due to heavy rains, exceeding the typical average for July in just an hour. Given this history, it can be concluded that while direct hurricane hits are rare, the effects of these storms in terms of heavy rainfall and associated flooding can pose a significant threat to Chantilly. Thus, in the face of any potential hurricane threat, residents should prepare for flooding and associated risks.
