Stanardsville, Virginia, is located inland, approximately 120 miles from the coastal region where hurricane threats are generally more significant. However, despite this distance, the potential for severe weather effects from hurricanes, such as torrential rain, high winds, and flooding, still exists. The town's elevation, standing mostly around 700 feet above sea level, does provide it with some level of protection from the storm surges typically associated with coastal hurricanes. However, Stanardsville lies in the path of potential freshwater flooding due to excessive precipitation, which is a common impact of a hurricane or tropical storm making its way inland. Major hurricanes and floods have impacted Stanardsville over the past 30 years. Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Isabel in 2003 were particularly destructive, causing substantial rainfall leading to flash flooding, extensive property damage, power outages and even loss of life. Moreover, the region’s historical flood risk is relatively high considering the rainfall level combined with the topography of the region, the mountains can enhance the rainfall, resulting in localized areas of stronger flood. Therefore, while direct hurricane contact might not be highly probable, Stanardsville residents should still prepare for these secondary impacts, which can still cause significant damage and disruption.
