As Southampton Meadows, Virginia, is located over 50 miles from the Atlantic coast, direct landfall impacts from hurricanes are less likely there than at coastal communities. However, the town can still experience significant effects from hurricanes, such as high winds, heavy rainfall, and tornadoes spawned by such systems. With an elevation of 49 feet, the town generally sits relatively high, which can help mitigate flooding risks. Yet, it is important to remember that heavy, sustained rainfall from a slow-moving or stalled hurricane can result in widespread flooding in areas that don't typically flood. Historically, Virginia is a state very much susceptible to hurricanes and tropical storms, and Southampton Meadows is no exception. Perhaps the most significant of these in recent years was Hurricane Floyd in 1999, which caused flooding in much of eastern Virginia, including Southampton County. Additionally, and more recently, Hurricanes Matthew in 2016 and Florence in 2018 resulted in heavy rainfall and cause localized area of flooding. In concert with often prevalent atmospheric conditions that lead to high precipitation, it's key to realize that hurricanes can cause significant damage even at some distance from the coast. Therefore, preparedness for high winds, heavy rainfall and potential tornadoes should be a priority for residents of Southampton Meadows when a hurricane threatens.
