Wintergreen, Virginia's biggest threat from hurricanes is likely from heavy rainfall leading to increased flood risk, as the town is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and roughly 150 miles inland from the coast. Historically, the effects of hurricanes in Wintergreen have been relatively minor compared to coastal areas of Virginia. However, there have been instances of major hurricanes impacting the area indirectly. For instance, Hurricane Fran in 1996 caused heavy rainfall and flooding across much of Virginia, which also affected Wintergreen. Hurricane Isabel in 2003 also wreaked havoc on Virginia, although mostly in the eastern parts of the state. High winds from these storms can also uproot trees and cause power outages. Residents should always pay close attention to the forecasts and potential flood warnings, and prepare for extreme weather events accordingly.
