Rose Hill, Virginia, located approximately 100 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, has a somewhat moderate risk for hurricane impacts. Although being inland provides some protection from the direct impact of major hurricanes, the town can still be exposed to heavy rainfall, high-speed winds, storm surges of nearby Sandy River, and sporadic tornadoes that hurricanes often bring. Considering its elevation of about 285 feet above sea level, it does have some relief from potential flooding compared to coastal areas, although heavy rainfall could still lead to localized flooding. Historical flood risk data also indicates that Rose Hill has seen a number of flash floods, primarily as a result of heavy rainfall, although river flooding can also occur when larger volumes of rain fall upstream. In the last 30 years, Hurricanes Fran (1996) and Isabel (2003) have significantly impacted Rose Hill, Virginia. Fran, being a Category 3 hurricane, resulted in heavy rainfall, strong winds, and damaging floods in the region. Similar conditions were also seen during Hurricane Isabel. Although Isabel made landfall as a Category 2 storm in North Carolina, it reached Virginia as a tropical storm and caused significant rainfall, widespread power outages and various reports of wind damage. Considering these past experiences, the residents of Rose Hill should always maintain vigilance during hurricane season and make proactive preparations as needed.
