About Clinchco.
Clinchco, Virginia, located in Dickenson County, is nestled away quite some distance from the Virginia coast and has a fairly high elevation. Thus, the danger from direct hurricane landfall impact is inherently lower as compared to the coastal towns. The physical removal from the coast often results in hurricanes weakening significantly before their effects can deeply penetrate such inland areas. However, remnants of tropical systems can still bring considerable rainfall causing flash floods, particularly in the mountainous terrains, which can lead to landslides. For instance, remnants of Hurricane Ivan in 2004 brought significant flooding to southwestern parts of Virginia, including Dickenson County. Historically, Clinchco has experienced moderate to high flood risks. Over the last 30 years, significant floods have been periodically documented, often associated with the remnants of tropical storms or hurricanes. Of note is the flood of 2002 caused by the remnants of Hurricane Isidore, resulting in substantial damage. Given this history, even if hurricane winds do not often reach Clinchco, the associated heavy rainfall can contribute to saturated soils and high river levels, escalating the risk of flash flooding. Therefore, despite its distance from the coast and elevated location, Clinchco remains vulnerable to the indirect impacts of hurricanes, mainly in the form of severe flooding.
