Keswick, Virginia, while not directly along the coast, is still vulnerable to hurricane threats given its proximity about 129 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Looking back over the past 30 years, several major hurricanes have had impacts on Keswick. Among them, Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Isabel in 2003 both caused significant damage via their associated heavy rains, wind, and flooding. More recently, the remnants of Hurricane Matthew in 2016 also resulted in excessive rainfall and a subsequent flood that impacted the area. It's important for residents to take these historical events into consideration and remain prepared, especially during the hurricane season, as even hurricanes that make landfall hundreds of miles away can still bring dangerous conditions to Keswick.
