Merrifield, Virginia, is located approximately 100 miles inland from the Atlantic coast. Although this distance significantly reduces the likelihood of direct hurricane hits, heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding remains a frequent hazard, even when hurricanes have been downgraded to tropical storms. While Merrifield's elevation varies, being significantly raised above sea level does provide some protection against storm surge. However, it certainly does not exempt the area from the serious risk of inland flooding, particularly after prolonged periods of intense rain. In the past 30 years, Merrifield has encountered numerous significant storm impacts, including hurricane-strength storms. For example, Hurricane Isabel in 2003 devastated large portions of Virginia, causing death and destruction due to powerful winds and floodwaters. Additionally, 2011’s Hurricane Irene produced an unusual amount of rain across the state, causing prolonged power outages and hefty costs in repairs. Flooding is generally the primary concern for Merrifield, emphasized by notable historical flood events such as those during Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and Hurricane Fran in 1996. Thus, with climate change, the potential of future hurricane-induced flooding is a serious risk that Merrifield and similar inland communities must consider.
