Given its coastal position along the Potomac River, Fairview Beach, Virginia is highly susceptible to hurricane threats. Storm surges, which are often the most dangerous aspects of hurricanes, pose a significant risk to this community as flooding can occur rapidly and be highly destructive. Moreover, due to the town's relatively low elevation, particularly in areas closest to the water, flooding risks are markedly increased. The low elevation does not afford any natural protection or buffer against rising water levels. Strong winds are also a concern as they have the potential to cause structural damage to buildings and homes, as well as uproot trees and down power lines, leading to potential outages across the community. In terms of historical precedents, Hurricane Bob in 1991 resulted in significant damage, mainly from winds, along the East coast while having a direct impact on the Virginia coastline, not far from Fairview Beach. More recently, in 2003, Hurricane Isabel led to widespread flooding and wind damage throughout the area. Furthermore, the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee in 2011 caused extensive flooding both from the Potomac River and smaller streams and rivulets within the town itself, underscoring the exposure of this community to significant storm impacts. The region also navigated through Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Michael in 2018, which again reemphasized the significant threats of storm surge, high winds, and rainfall. Future storms hold the potential to cause similar - if not worse - destruction, and as such, local authorities must treat the threat as a significant risk.
