Historically, Glen Wilton, Virginia, has not been directly hit by hurricanes. Located approximately 200 miles inland from the Atlantic coastline and with an elevation of about 1148 feet, the spot is generally shielded from the worst of the impacts. However, hurricane-driven rain bands have been known to reach the area and give rise to significant rainfall. Considering the historical flood risk, Glen Wilton lies near Craig Creek and the James River which puts it at risk of flooding in any extreme weather events, particularly if storms bring heavy and prolonged rainfall. Reflecting back on the hurricane impacts in the last 30 years, Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Isabel in 2003 brought significant rain as remnants manoeuvred inland. Each of these storms caused widespread flooding along the fringes of rivers, including Craig Creek and the James River. While the direct impact of hurricanes being located fairly distant from the coast may be minimized, residents and authorities should prepare for the potential threat of flooding and the challenge it presents to infrastructure, homes and property. Heavy storm rains could also cause landslides, power outages, and tree falls due to the area's hilly terrain and dense forests. Hurricane preparedness plans should, therefore, factor in these considerations as well.
