About Tacoma.
Tacoma, Virginia, while landlocked and somewhat protected by the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, is not entirely immune from the impacts of hurricanes. Although the town is approximately 200 miles away from the coast, substantial hurricanes have brought significant rain to the area, which has led to flooding in the past. Tacoma's location in the mountain valleys makes it particularly susceptible to flash flooding during heavy rainfall events, with rivers and creeks overflowing and inundating roads and low-lying areas. In terms of historical impacts, the remnants of Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Ivan in 2004 resulted in heavy rain and severe flooding in Tacoma. Fran's heavy rain of around 6-8 inches led to significant flooding and damage in the area. More recently, insulation from the coastal impacts of hurricanes like Florence and Michael in 2018 has allowed Tacoma to escape major damages; however, there were still reports of brief flash flooding and road closures. These events provide a reminder that even though Tacoma is inland and at a higher elevation, the area is still at risk from the indirect impacts of hurricanes and the associated heavy rainfall and flooding.
