Vienna, Virginia, situated about 18 miles west of Washington, D.C., and approximately 187 miles from the coast, has a relatively lower risk of direct impact from a hurricane than the coastal Virginian cities. However, hurricanes and tropical storms can bring considerable rainfall leading to localized flooding. The town, with an average elevation of about 358 feet above sea level, is relatively well-insulated from storm surge damages associated with hurricanes; nonetheless, heavy and prolonged rainfall can potentially lead to river or flash flooding.
