Stevens Creek, Virginia, due to its elevated location and substantial distance inland from the coast, faces a less direct threat from hurricanes compared to coastal communities in the state. However, hurricanes and tropical storm remnants can still present significant hazards, especially in terms of heavy rainfall and associated flooding. Stevens Creek resides in a region with documented flood risk, and these risks could be amplified during heavy rain events brought on by tropical storms or hurricanes. Inland flooding can often pose more of a threat to life and property than hurricane winds for communities away from the immediate coastline. Though not on the direct hurricane paths, Stevens Creek has witnessed the impacts of several major hurricanes in the last 30 years. For instance, Hurricane Fran in 1996 led to extensive flooding in the area, and more recently, Hurricane Matthew in 2016 resulted in heavy rains and flooding in several locations in the region. Hence, while the threat of hurricanes and tropical storms can be less severe because of geographical considerations, vigilance and preparedness for heavy rain and flooding should remain high during the Atlantic hurricane season.
