Duffield, Virginia, is situated some distance from the coast and at a higher elevation, which relatively minimizes its direct exposure to the initial impacts of hurricanes such as storm surges. However, this inland town is not entirely immune to the secondary impacts of hurricanes. These secondary impacts primarily manifest in terms of heavy rain and strong wind. Given its location in the Appalachian Mountains, Duffield has the risk of flash flooding and landslides due to heavy rainfall, which can result in property and infrastructural damage or even loss of life. In the last 30 years, several severe storms have passed through Virginia, including Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Isabel in 2003, both causing significant rainfall and wind damage. Most recently, in 2018, Hurricane Florence and Michael affected the state with heavy rain and wind. These storms can cause power outages, knock down trees, and disrupt transportation routes. Despite being farther inland and at a higher elevation, residents of Duffield should prepare for such impacts during hurricane events, especially as climate change may contribute to an increase in the frequency and intensity of these storms.
