Poquoson, Virginia is significantly vulnerable to hurricane impacts due to its coastal proximity, flat topography and low elevation. The city, predominantly a peninsular city, is primarily at or just above sea level, making it susceptible to storm surges and the potential for significant flooding. Localities in the Hampton Roads region, including Poquoson, are all areas at an increased risk for hurricanes, especially because the Atlantic hurricane season tends to be most active between June and November. Also, due to its geographic position in the Chesapeake Bay, increased wind speed and precipitation factors add to threats during hurricane occurrences. In the past three decades, several notable hurricanes and floods have impacted Poquoson. Most notably, Hurricane Isabel in 2003 brought significant storm surge flooding to Poquoson. This was then followed by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which further exacerbated the city's vulnerability to flooding due to heavy rainfall and higher sea surge impacts. Furthermore, in recent years, the increased frequency of so-called "sunny day" or nuisance flooding due to sea level rise also hints at future issues that will most likely be amplified during hurricane events. It is, therefore, critical for Poquoson to invest in mitigating such risks and continue building community resilience.
