Lowes Island, Virginia is relatively distant from the coast but is still susceptible to the impacts of hurricanes, particularly torrential rains, strong winds, and flooding. On account of its lower elevation and proximity to the Potomac River, Lowes Island is at risk for considerable flood damage, not only from the river swelling because of rains directly over the area but also from upstream precipitation. This flooding risk is heightened further due to the storm surge associated with hurricanes. Other potential impacts include damage to infrastructure from sustained and gust wind speeds, as well as power outages due to fallen trees and other debris. Historical precedent also supports this assessment of risk. In terms of major hurricanes and floods impacting Lowes Island in the last 30 years, Hurricane Fran in 1996 and again Hurricane Isabel in 2003 caused extensive damage due to heavy rainfall, high winds, and significant flooding. More recently, in 2011, remnants of Tropical Storm Lee produced intense rainfall across the region causing the Potomac River to swell and result in substantial flood damage to Lowes Island and other nearby communities. Local authorities and residents must remain vigilant during hurricane season and adhere to all advised preparations to safeguard lives and property.
