About Madison Heights.
Madison Heights, Virginia, while not a coastal town, is still subject to significant hurricane threats due to its proximity to the eastern coastline of the United States. Although the town is approximately 200 miles inland, hurricanes and tropical storms moving northwards along the Atlantic seaboard can retain significant strength as they reach this region. The town’s location at a lower elevation near the James River means it is susceptible to rising water levels and flooding too. Although not frequent, over the last 30 years, Madison Heights has experienced some severe weather impacts from hurricanes and consequential flooding. In 2003, for example, Hurricane Isabel caused substantial damage in Virginia, including Madison Heights. While the town does not frequently suffer from direct hurricane impacts, it is vulnerable to the substantial rainfall associated with such storms, which can saturally result in flash floods. In 2018, heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Michael led to wide-ranging flooding that dramatically affected Madison Heights and surrounding areas. Hence it seems critical for local officials and residents to prepare for potential flooding in the event of a hurricane threat.
