South Boston, Virginia, is not directly on the coast but it is not immune to the impacts of a hurricane. While the risk of direct hit from a hurricane is relatively low due to its inland location, South Boston in the Southern part of Virginia can still be significantly affected by remnants of a hurricane, particularly from heavy rainfall leading to flooding. Its moderate elevation does somewhat mitigate, but not eliminate, flood risks. The landlocked town has a couple of rivers running nearby, the Dan and Banister River, subjecting it to possible riverine flooding. One significant hurricane that impacted South Boston, and indeed much of Virginia, was Hurricane Fran in 1996 which caused heavy rains and flooding, leading to property damages and loss of life. Similarly, the remnants of Hurricane Michael in 2018 resulted in severe flooding in various sections of South Central Virginia including South Boston. In addition to flooding, hurricanes can bring other serious impacts like power outages, downed trees, and interrupted services, which local residents should always take into account in their preparations.
