South Boston, Virginia, is not directly on the coast but it is not immune to the impacts of a hurricane. While the risk of direct hit from a hurricane is relatively low due to its inland location, South Boston in the Southern part of Virginia can still be significantly affected by remnants of a hurricane, particularly from heavy rainfall leading to flooding. Its moderate elevation does somewhat mitigate, but not eliminate, flood risks. The landlocked town has a couple of rivers running nearby, the Dan and Banister River, subjecting it to possible riverine flooding.
