Given its relatively flat topography and an average elevation of around 285 feet, the town is not extraordinarily prone to storm surge, but it can face inland flooding due to its proximity to multiple water bodies. In terms of historical storm impacts, Laurel Hill has felt the effects of several major hurricanes over the past three decades including hurricanes Dennis (2005), Ivan (2004), and Opal (1995). Each storm brought significant rainfall and winds to the region, causing wind damages and inland flooding. Particularly, Hurricane Ivan generated extensive rainfall totals of over 15 inches in some areas, resulting in extensive flood damage. Therefore, while the town is somewhat sheltered from direct landfalling hurricanes by virtue of its distance from the coast, it still faces notable threats from hurricanes and tropical storms. It is crucial for residents to not underestimate these threats and remain prepared, particularly for the potential of heavy rainfall and inland flooding.
