University Center, Virginia, while somewhat removed from the immediate coastline, is still susceptible to the impacts of tropical systems, including hurricanes. Its distance from the coast merely means that it is usually spared from the early impact of storm surge, and its modest elevation reduces the risk of catastrophic flooding. However, heavy rainfall from these systems can still result in river and flash flooding. Additionally, high wind speeds, which are a major characteristic of hurricanes, pose a threat to structures and can cause power outages. Regarding historical context, while University Center has not been directly hit by a major hurricane in the past 30 years, it has seen its share of storm effects. Notably, Tropical Storm Lee in 2011 caused widespread flooding in and around University Center due to persistent, heavy rains. It should also be noted that proximity to Hurricane Alley denotes that this area is always at some level of risk during hurricane season. There is ongoing need to maintain vigilance and preparedness for potential tropical systems and their impacts.
