Situated in Albemarle County, Virginia, Pantops is about 150 miles inland from the Atlantic coast. While the distance from the coast significantly reduces the risk of severe destruction associated with landfalling hurricanes, remnants of tropical cyclinones can indeed impact the region and cause substantial damage. The town is generally at a low risk for storm surge due to its elevation (about 610 feet above sea level), but significant rainfall from decaying hurricanes can trigger flash flooding, primarily along waterways like the adjacent Rivanna River. Heavy rainfall in a short time period can saturally overwhelm drainage systems and cause detriment to infrastructures as well as residential and commercial properties. In terms of historical hurricane impacts, Hurricane Fran in 1996 is one example; although significantly weakened by the time it reached inland Virginia, it still produced torrential rains causing widespread flooding. More recently, in 2011, Hurricane Irene had a significant impact on the region by causing power outages and flash flooding. Also, in 2018, remnants of Hurricane Michael brought heavy rainfall and fast-moving floods to central Virginia, including Pantops, causing power outages and prompting water rescues. Hence, the potential for hurricane-induced impacts in Pantops warrants careful attention and proactive measures, in particular, to the threat of flash flooding.
