Lake Land'Or, Virginia, although approximately 40 miles from the Atlantic coast, is not immune to the impacts of hurricanes and tropical storm systems. Factors such as the town's relatively low elevation and its proximity to several bodies of water, including Lake Land'Or itself, Lake Heritage, and the nearby Mattaponi River, can contribute to heightened flood risk during major storm events. Increased rates of precipitation, a common impact of Atlantic hurricane systems, can overwhelm these bodies of water, leading to overbank flooding and flash flooding in the immediate and surrounding areas. Additionally, high wind speeds can cause extensive damage to power lines, homes, and infrastructure, which can affect the town's recovery process. There have been numerous instances in the last 30 years where hurricanes have impacted Lake Land'Or. Most notably was Hurricane Isabel in September 2003 that caused a great deal of tree damage due to powerful wind gusts and flooding from its heavy rain. More recently, Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Florence in 2018, although weakened by the time they reached Virginia, still brought ample rainfall that resulted in river overflows and localized flooding. These historical instances underline the need for Lake Land'Or to have comprehensive emergency plans and resources for hurricane response, and for residents to stay informed during storm seasons about potential hurricane risks, especially regarding evacuation procedures and routes in the event of flooding.
