About Oak Hill.
Oak Hill, Florida, is located on the east coast of the state situated near the Atlantic Ocean. As a coastal town, it has a high risk for direct impact from hurricanes and tropical storms. Its lower elevation and close proximity to the Mosquito Lagoon means that storm surge inundation and significant flood damage are major threats. Even a moderate hurricane can push large volumes of water into the lagoon and cause severe flooding, endangering property and lives. Historically, Oak Hill has been no stranger to impactful storms. In 1995, Hurricane Erin brought heavy rainfall to the area causing flooding and associated damage. More recently, the town experienced the significant effects of Hurricane Irma in 2017, which resulted in wide-spread flooding and power outages. Similar incidents were recorded with Hurricane Jeanne and Frances in 2004, and Hurricane Floyd in 1999. While the town can take measures to prepare and minimize damage, hurricanes remain a regular part of life in Oak Hill, and residents must ensure they are adequately prepared for these tropical systems.
