About Gulf Stream.
Gulf Stream, Florida, is a coastal town located in Palm Beach County with near direct exposure to the Atlantic Ocean. Given its close proximity to the coast, Gulf Stream is highly susceptible to the threats of hurricane-related impacts. These typically include damaging winds, severe storm surge, and heavy rainfall, all potentially resulting in substantial flooding. The town sits just slightly above sea level, a factor that significantly contributes to its heightened vulnerability to storm surges and flooding. Homes lying below the standard flood level are particularly at risk. Power outages and infrastructure damages are other likely impacts due to toppling trees and flying debris caused by high winds. Historically, Gulf Stream has dealt with a number of major hurricanes and floods in the past 30 years. One of the most notable was Hurricane Andrew in 1992, one of the strongest to ever hit Florida. Others include Hurricane Frances in 2004 and the highly destructive Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Despite an average annual flood risk reported to be quite moderate, a significant amplified risk is recorded during hurricane activity. Overall, residents should be prepared to evacuate to higher ground or seek shelter in a well-secured building if a hurricane is expected and heed all warnings and evacuation orders from local authorities. It’s recommended to always have a disaster preparedness plan in place due to Gulf Stream's substantial hurricane threat.
