About Gulfport.
Gulfport, Florida is exceptionally vulnerable to hurricanes and other tropical storm events, given its coastal location along the Gulf of Mexico. The town's flat topography and low elevation further enhance this vulnerability by increasing the risk of storm surge flooding, which is traditionally the most destructive element of a tropical storm. Rainfall flooding is another major threat for Gulfport. The heavy rains accompanying these storm systems can overwhelm regional drainage infrastructure, exacerbating the already heightened flooding risks. Historically, Gulfport has experienced several significant hurricane impacts. For instance, in 2004 Hurricane Charley produced severe damage throughout the region, and in 2005 Hurricane Katrina also affected the locale, despite its center hitting further west. More recently, Hurricane Irma in 2017 caused extensive damages in the town. Recalling these historical events highlights the very real threats posed by hurricanes, including strong winds, heavy rains, and storm surge, all of which emphasize the importance of solid hurricane readiness and response plans in Gulfport.
