About White Springs.
White Springs, Florida, situated in Hamilton County, has a moderate vulnerability to hurricanes given its geographical location approximately 60 miles from the East Coast and the Gulf Coast. The town is fairly inland, which provides a buffer from direct coastal storm surges. However, the delayed effect of hurricanes can still result in heavy rainfall and intense winds, causing inland flooding and extensive property damage. Its elevation, which ranges between 50 to 100 feet, somewhat reduces flood risks compared to towns located at sea level, but this does not completely rule out the possibility of flooding, especially during hurricane events. White Springs has faced the impacts of several notable tropical cycline systems. In 1995, Hurricane Opal passed directly over the town, bringing extensive rainfall and high winds. In more recent times, Hurricane Irma in 2017 has been the most impactful, causing substantial wind damage and power outages. Moreover, there was considerable rainfall accumulation which led to significant flooding of the Suwannee River, impacting many houses in the town. Over the period, White Springs has also experienced non-hurricane floods, often associated with summertime thunderstorms and winter-period non-tropical low-pressure systems. Therefore, it is crucial for the town to have thorough emergency planning for hurricane and flood disasters.
